Visa Guidelines

International students who wish to study full-time at any educational institution in Malaysia must apply for a Student Pass. This is a requirement of Regulation 13 of the Immigration Regulations 1963.

  • International students must apply and obtain the approval to study in Malaysia before entering Malaysia.
  • Conversion of an existing Social Pass (Tourist Visa) to Student Visa is strictly not allowed.
  •  International student are required to apply online for a Visa Approval Letter (eVAL) through Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS).
  • Students are advised to submit their eVAL application at least eight (8) weeks prior to the registration date to allow sufficient time for processing.
  • Students are encouraged to submit their applications as early as possible to avoid any delays that may affect their registration or arrival in Malaysia.

As an international student studying in Malaysia you will be granted a student pass and visa for a year (or part of a year) depending on the country which issues your passport. You are personally responsible for the timely submission of the documents to obtain your student visa.

All new application for Visa applications is managed by Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) prior of submission to Malaysia Immigration Department.

General Immigration Requirement in Malaysia

01 STUDENT PASS

All International Students (except Diplomatic Pass holders, Malaysian Permanent Residents (P.R.) are required to have a Student Pass while studying at UMT.

02 ONLINE APPLICATION

International student have to apply Visa online at Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) website. You must hold a valid Student Pass for the entire duration of your stay at UMT.

03 SINGLE APPLICATION

If you have submitted an application for a Visa, you are not allowed to submit a similar application through another institution or vice versa. This will create confusion within the Malaysian Immigration Department (DIM) and may result in delay in your Student Pass application process.

04 APPROVAL TIME

Student Pass approvals usually take between 4-7 weeks by Immigration. UMT may not be able to obtain a Student Pass for you on time if your application to UMT is received less than 6 weeks from the registration date.

05 PASS RENEWAL FOR SENIOR STUDENT

For senior student, it is mandatory that Student Pass to be applied and renewed through International Centre UMT. Failing to adhere to this can be violation of the Malaysian Immigration Department’s regulations. While we will assist in your Student Pass application, International Centre (IC) cannot be held liable for any change in policies by the Malaysian Immigration Department in regards to issuance of Student Pass.

06 CLASS ATTENDANCE 

You must meet the programme requirements by attending 80% of all your scheduled classes and achieve satisfactory academic results. Failing to do so can result in your Student Pass being revoked.

07 MEDICAL CERTIFICATE

Attendance in class is compulsory at all-time unless you are able to provide a Medical Certificate (MC) from a certified doctor. Consistent failure to do so will result in your Student Pass being revoked.

08 VISA EXPIRY

You are required to take responsibility of monitoring the expiry dates of your passport and student pass.

09 VISA EXTENSION

When an extension of the Pass is required, students must submit their passports to the UMT International Centre 3 months before the expiry of the pass in order to facilitate the extension.

10 PENALTIES

All penalties imposed by the Malaysian Immigration Department in the event of late extension or expiry of Student Pass are to be borne by the student.

11 STUDENT PASS CANCELLATION

Upon 21 working days before completion of your studies in UMT, you are required to cancel your Student Pass or it might lead to forfeiture of the Bond Deposit refund.

Step-by-step Visa Management Process

If you are planning to study at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), it is important to understand and fulfil all immigration requirements before travelling to Malaysia. 

We strongly encourage you to begin your visa application as early as possible to  avoid delays that may affect your registration or arrival at UMT.

Visa Management is carried out for:

  • International Students
  • International Staff (Employment Pass)
  • Family members (Social Visit Pass)
  • Permission for Children to Study in Malaysia

Note : If you are currently in Malaysia under another type of visa or pass, you should verify whether it permits you to undertake full-time studies. If your current pass does not allow study, you will be required to obtain a valid Students Pass before commencing your programme at UMT.

Before You Apply for a Student Pass

Before your Student Pass application can be processed, you must : 

  • Apply for a full-time academic programme offered by UMT.
  • Receive and accept your Offer Letter from UMT
  • Fulfil all admission requirements stated in your offer
  • Make the required payments as specefied in your offer letter (where applicable)
  • Submit all required documents to the International Centre, UMT for Student Pass processing through EMGS.

How to Apply for a Student Pass

Once you have accepted your offer, the International Centre, UMT will guide you through the Student Pass application process.

The process generally includes: 

  • Submitting all required supporting documents
  • Paying the EMGS processing fee and any applicable charges 
  • Waiting for the approval of your Electronic Visa Approval Letter (eVAL) issued by EMGS
  • Applying for a Visa with Reference (VDR) at the nearest Malaysian Embassy or High Commission if required by your nationality.
  • Travelling to Malaysia and completing the Student Pass endorsement process upon arrival.

Required Documents

The following documents are generally required for a Student Pass application : 

  • A valid passport
  • Offer Letter from UMT
  • Copy of your passport information page
  • Passport -sized photographs that meet EMGS specifications
  • Academic certificates and transcripts
  • Proof of English language proficiency (where applicable)
  • Medical examination report in accordance with EMGS requirements 
  • Proof of payment of the applicable fees
  • Any additional documents requested by UMT or EMGS

Note : Required documents may vary depending on your nationality and programme of study. The International Centre, UMT will provide you with the latest document requirements during the application process.

Student Pass Conditions 

All international students are responsible for ensuring that their Student Pass remains valid throughout their period of study at UMT.

Students are also required to : 

  • Comply with all Malaysian immigration laws and regulations
  • Renew their Student Pass before its expiry date 
  • Maintain full-time student status throughout their studies 
  • Inform the International Centre, UMT of any changes to their passport, personal information or study status.
Failure to comply with Student Pass conditions may result in action by the Malaysian immigration authorities including the cancellation of your Student Pass.

Visa Management for Remote Study Students

International students who commence their studies through remote study from their home country before travelling to Malaysia are still required to comply with all immigration requirements and regulations set by the Government of Malaysia.

The International Centre (IC), UMT will coordinate and facilitate the Student Pass application through Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) once students have fulfilled the University’s admission requirements and submitted all the required documents. Students are encouraged to begin the Student Pass application process are early as possible to avoid delays when they are ready to travel to Malaysia.

Throughout the remote study period, students are advised to maintain regular communication with the International Centre, UMT to receive updates on the status of their Student Pass application, immigration documentation and travel arrangements. Once the Student Pass has been approved and all immigration requirements have been fulfilled, students may make the necessary travel arrangements to Malaysia and complete the Student Pass endorsement process upon arrival at UMT as below :

Note : Students must comply with all policies and procedures established by UMT, Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) and the Immigration Department of Malaysia. Any changes to their study status or intended arrival date must be communicated promptly to the International Centre, UMT.

International Student Responsibilities

Throughout their period of study at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), all international students are responsible for ensuring that their Student Pass, as well as any immigration matters relating to their Dependent Passes for spouses and children (where applicable), remain valid throughout their stay in Malaysia.

Students must also comply with all policies, regulations and requirements imposed by the Immigration Department of Malaysia. Any renewal, extension or change of pass status must be completed before the expiry date to avoid any action by the immigration authorities.

Students are required to notify the International Centre, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) immediately of any changes to their personal information, passport details, study status or dependent information to ensure that thier records and immigration status remain accurate and up to date.
